Just in case you’re still a little confused about the difference between emotional avoidance and emotion driven behaviour, emotional avoidance is what you do in advance, with the hope of avoiding experiencing the anxious/panic symptoms in the first place, whereas the fleeing is what you do when the anxiety/panic has arrived.
In the subway example, emotion avoidance might include only going on the subway when you’re with someone you know (safety behaviour), only traveling on the subway during non-rush hour times (subtle avoidance), or listening to your ipod as a means of tuning out (cognitive avoidance).
