In this section, you learned about ways that you might be avoiding experiencing certain emotions or things you might be doing to prevent other emotions from intensifying. While they work in the short term, over time they serve to maintain the problem as their very use suggests that there is something dangerous about those experiences.

Your homework is to discover what things you do to avoid experiencing uncomfortable emotions, using the My List of Emotional Avoidance Strategies Form. Remember, if you’re unsure of why you’re doing something and suspect it could be a way of avoiding an emotion, try not doing it and see what happens.
