Module 1 - Motivation Enhancement

Setting Your Goals

Before starting on any journey, it’s always helpful to have an idea of where you’re heading. Chances are you wouldn’t jump into your car for a road trip without having a final destination in mind.

This work is no different, so take a few minutes to list a few things that you would like to be doing differently by the end of these few weeks. Notice the emphasis on doing. Although one of your goals might be to feel happier or more confident, research suggests you’re more likely to achieve your goals if they are more concrete. Moreover, then it can also be easier for you and others to know that you’re accomplishing your goals.

For example, it might be your goal to feel less depressed. What you really want to think about is: What will you be doing differently when you’re less depressed? It might be going to the gym 3 times a week or going out to socialize once a week. These goals have the advantage of being more specific and objective.
